Typhoon Ketsana

No escaping the wind as typhoon Ketsana wreaks havoc across Asia. Cocoa Beach had sloppy waves rolling in this morning, better day for kiteboarding or windsurfing.

Stormriding

Choppy mushy waves and onshore conditions continue, rideable surf still at Nang Thong north beach.

Khao Lak SUP

Paddling the SUP around the head on a calmer day. We're still enjoying trying the SUP in different conditions but are now convinced SUP is a perfect all round flat water and wave riding tool as well as being an awesome workout. R.I.P. Wayne

A squeaking ball of mud stuck in the river bank was how we found this little one. Once washed and cleaned a small dog appeared, no more than a week old, parents unknown. Sadly, Wayne didn’t survive for long but at least she was given a fighting chance.

Orange Peel

Mr. N, one of the local dive masters picks a nice clean day at Coconuts to try his first surf session. He’s been back for a second try since and is already on his feet.

Bunch Of Coconuts

Coconuts could be said to have been our local break during this season, notice the crowded line-up.

Cocoa Beach 08-2009

When the wind is howling onshore, the beaches south of the Cape are blown out and there’s a 3m+ swell running, Cocoa Beach is worth checking. The waves tend to closeout but there’s plenty of makeable wedges that come through. The backwash effect at high tide can blow the waves up by half their size again.

The World Famous Rusty Pelican

Aka 'Moes', this is Moe, he’s a surfer, he also serves up very cold beer, a select menu of delicious cheap Mexican dishes and the coolest tunes in town. Find the Rusty Pelican down the small soi opposite the Mukdara Resort on Bang Niang beach road.

Nang Thong 08-2009

The south side of Nang Thong beach, the nearest break to Khao Lak’s tourist center. Not overly fantastic waves this day, the north side of the lighthouse seems to have better surf.

Coconuts 08-2009

Huge thank you to Mr. J for submitting this sequence.

Natai 08-2009

Natai ranks as one of our favourite beach breaks in the Phangnga area as it picks up plenty of swell, has long shapely walls and always an empty line-up. The pier lends a handy route out for days with more size.

Hotspring 08-2009

Small waves breaking into the rivermouth at Hotspring, isolated spot involving a short paddle across a river to access the wave.

Glass Bay 07-2009

Made up of three smaller bays with beach waves, a point and a reef slab, quite sheltered from the predominant onshores it's a cool place to hang out and surf all day. Thank you to www.isup.asia for the photos.

Rayong 07-2009

Thank you to Mr. G for the photos.

Ya Point 07-2009

It has to be big and stormy for this place to work but on the few occasions it does, it peaks on the corner with a left breaking into the beach and a right which pushes around the point, Samet island in the background. Pics taken from an elevated position.

Kalim 06-2009

The Quicksilver longboard leg of the competition held at Kalim.

Thai Muang 06-2009

We've found when its working here the surf tends to have more size and power than the Khao Lak area though it doesn't like the wind. The spot just after the park entrance with the convenience of a large beach side sala and showers is worth the Bt20 entrance fee.

Khuek Khak 05-2009

The best we’ve seen the rivermouth working to date, glassy waist to shoulder high hollow waves. Seems better near high on an incoming with good lefts and rights breaking into the mouth.

Cape Beach 05-2009

The beaches either side of the rivermouth can hold fair sized waves during stormy conditions. Had a few good sessions with light offshores in the mornings. Pics taken from the car park.

Suratthani 12-2008

Monsoon wind waves roll into a bay in Suratthani.

Phra Thong Island 12-2008

Nice scenic boat trip. A wave breaks to the north into the channel between Phra Thong and Ra Island, typical of conditions this time of year, not a lot of wave action.
